Downhill Start
How to deal with Downhill Starts
Moving off when facing down hill is relatively easy, because gravity will help move the car. However, you still have to maintain control and make sure that it is safe to do so.
1. With the engine on, select first gear (or second gear on a very steep hill).
2. Apply the footbrake and hold.
3. Make your normal observations and blind spot checks.
4. When you are about to move off, let go the handbrake.
5. Let the footbrake off gently and the car will start to move.
6. As the car makes off, smoothly lift up the clutch and the brake pedals fully to allow the car to pick up speed.
7. Accelerate and drive on as usual.
