Pedestrian Crossings
There are three main types of pedestrian crossings:
- Uncontrolled such as a Zebra Crossing
- Light controlled such as a Pelican, Puffin or Toucan Crossing
- Patrolled crossings such as a School Crossing Patrol

Things you should know about pedestrians

Pedestrians can be unpredictable and may not know how to use the crossing properly. They should wait at the pavement edge before walking out, but sometimes they walk out anyway, be on your guard and be safe.
Some people are slow to learn, or are not familiar with crossings (visitors from other countries), they may look the other way: we look right left right but they may look left right left, before crossing, and do not know how to act and react. Help them by being patient.
Some pedestrians such as children are very small and can be almost hidden by the safety railings and badly placed flower-pots, when standing near the crossing. Look out for anyone who might be hidden in this way.
Be aware that children will run, instead of walk across.
People will cross the road without using the crossing, which would be only a few metres away. This is nonsensical but common, be tolerant.
In any case, if there are slow moving pedestrians crossing the road ahead of you, they may be trying to get through the traffic, half the road at a time so you should be prepared to stop.
