Learner Driver Advice

Diane Hall works incredibly close with learner drivers around the UK in helping them manage driving test nerves and fears.

Diane has accumulated a list of Driving Test Tips and hints from other learners on how they overcame their nerves.

You never know, even just one of these tips could change the way you think about driving.

·   Think of all the good times that you’re going to have when you pass your test. This will help to keep you focused on the positives of passing, rather than the negatives of failing.

·   Imagine that you’re a taxi driver and you’re taking someone home and you have to follow their directions. You can’t really ‘fool’ your brain; you know it’s a test, but this may be beneficial for some learners.

·   Don’t do anything stressful on the same day. So don’t book a dentist appointment or sit an exam!

·   Have a positive attitude: ‘I will try my best, but if I fail, then at least I’ve tried’.  Although it may seem like it at the time, failing your driving test isn’t the end of the world.

·   Don’t have a big meal before your test – it will make you feel sluggish and tired.

·   Ask your instructor to sit in on your test – a familiar face may make you feel more at ease, although some learners they may find this more intimidating. It all depends on how you feel about it.

·   Don’t tell everyone when your test is – it just puts more pressure on you.

·   Listen to music, or even have the radio on during your test. The examiner should allow this, so long as it isn’t a distraction.
