Keep Calm and Study On - Covid - 19 Theory and Practical Test Update!
So the cat is out of the bag! You’re probably fully aware now that as per the DVSA’s latest announcement, all Theory Tests have been postponed until and including the 20th April 2020, and the Practical Driving Tests have been suspended for up to three months - YIKES. This of course comes as a result of the unprecedented spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Across the UK the DVSA has taken preventative action to combat this highly infectious virus by shutting the doors of their Theory Test centres, and putting a halt to Practical Driving Tests.
What is COVID-19
It’s a new disease which has had a widespread disruptive impact across the entire globe. World leaders and health organisations are still trying to understand how it spreads, the severity of illness it can cause, and how to best combat it when infected. As such, the DVSA, as well as many organisations, have ensured they minimise person-to-person contact by postponing all Theory and Driving Tests - including those for Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) and trainee LGV & PCV drivers.
Has your test been cancelled?
Amidst the unravelling of the COVID-19 developments, you might have received an email from the DVSA saying your test has been cancelled - this will apply for anyone that had their test booked between 23rd March - 20th April. Don’t panic, everybody would’ve also received this email. Rest assured, you will be receiving a refund within a few weeks from the DVSA - a confirmation email will be sent out in due course. You will then be able to go ahead and rebook your test on any date that is after the 20th April 2020.
Information still remains relatively unclear in regards to the Practical Driving Test. As per the DVSA’s announcement, we know that the Practical Driving Tests have been postponed for up to three months. Rest assured, you will be receiving an email which will explain the rebooking process - with a new date and time for your test, this should arrive two weeks before your original test date. As a ballpark estimation, your new test date will be roughly three months after your original test date.
The only exception to these test cancellations will be for those people who are critical workers in the fight against COVID-19. The government has identified these as people who work in the following professions:
Health and social care
Education and childcare
Key public services
Local and national government
Food and other necessary goods
Public safety and national security
Utilities, communication and financial services
If you fall within one of these categories, you might be able to book an emergency Theory Test through the DVSA. You will need to contact them via email and state the importance of you taking your test for your job in such circumstances to [email protected]. The same also applies if you’re looking to book a driving test. Using [email protected], you must reach out to the DVSA and send proof that as a key worker, passing your Practical Driving Test is crucial for your job.
NOTE: For those of you that passed your Driving Theory Test two years ago, but haven’t taken your Practical Test, the DVSA have also provided an update. Legally, your test certificate cannot be extended under any circumstances, even in the current situation with COVID-19. So if you’re reaching the two-year mark since passing your Theory Test, you might be forced to resit your Theory Test again before you can take your Practical Driving Test.
What you should do now?
For the rest of the non-key workers, it’ll just be a waiting game unfortunately. Until further information can be provided by the DVSA, we advise you continue staying on top of the learning process and revision.
