Learner Driver Car Insurance

Get covered with Marmalade

Learning to drive is a huge life stage, so anything that can make it as simple, straightforward and enjoyable as possible must be a good thing!

Alongside lessons with a professional driving instructor, the DVSA recommends that learner drivers have approximately 22 hours of private practice in a friend’s or family member’s car before taking their practical test. How can you do this without it costing the earth – and risking the car owner’s No Claims Discount?

What’s the most cost-effective way to have private practice

The cost of taking out insurance to cover you as a learner, is likely to be quite a lot less than the cost of the additional lessons that would be needed if you only ever drove with an instructor. This means that private practice using short-term learner insurance is likely to help you pass for less money!

Who can supervise me when I’m driving a private car?

The DVSA regulations state that anyone supervising a learner driver must:

  • Be aged 21 or over
  • Have held a full driving licence for a minimum of 3 years
  • Be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in (eg a manual car)

That said, insurers may well have their own conditions such as the fully qualified driver being over 25, so always check the terms of the policy before you buy!

What next?

We’d like to introduce you to Marmalade’s Learner Driver Insurance! Their short-term policies are a bolt-on to the owner’s insurance; what this means is that because you have your own insurance, the main driver’s No Claims Discount is protected in the event of an accident.

Learner Driver Insurance can be bought in 30, 60, or 90-day blocks, and once you’ve held one policy with them then you can add extra time on from as little as one week. This is perfect if your policy ends just before your test and you want to use the car on your big day – which you are welcome to do!
